Size: 6.75-7 inchesA large barbet, bright yellow below with orange or scarlet throat. Females are more heavily streaked on back, auricular, and underparts. Throat of female spotted or streaked, but some of the regions are unmarked or scarlet.
Song is a series of coupled hoots, accelerating in pace and descending in pitch: 'boop-boop, boop-boop-boopboop-booboop-bubup'.
Calls include various grunts and snarls.
